How do I study to become a Beauty Therapist?

It depends on the treatments you want to be able to offer, but typically you will go down one of 3 study routes:

To progress further, you can undertake Level 4 and 5 qualifications in Beauty, take a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship or even go to university to study.

What hours will I work as a Beauty Therapist?

You are likely to work 37-40 hours per week, over a 7-day rota. Your hours are likely to include Saturday work and possibly some evening work too.

What could I earn as a Beauty Therapist?

A Beauty Therapist’s salary can range from around £16K when you’re starting out, up to around £24K as you progress. There are plenty of options for you to go further too.

 

How long does a Beauty Therapy course take?

Some courses are delivered as intensive study and can take as little as six weeks.

Others may be up to a year in length, and an apprenticeship can take up to 18 months to complete.

What other skills will I learn?

How much will it cost?

Costs can vary, as there are different sizes of qualifications, and the costs are set by the individual college or training provider.

What will I do as a Beauty Therapist?

  • provide a variety of types of facial treatments
  • apply make-up for various occasions, such as weddings
  • shape eyebrows and lift and colour eyelashes
  • give a manicure, pedicure or other nail treatment like extensions and nail art
  • remove unwanted facial and body hair
  • do non-surgical skin improvement treatments
  • provide massage therapy
  • offer ultraviolet (UV) treatments and spray tanning

What qualifications do I need to study Beauty Therapy?

  • 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, for a level 2 course
  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 3 course
  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths for a T level
